What do you do when you have two incubators with eggs, a brooder full of chicks, and the power goes out? Well, we found ourselves figuring THAT one out yesterday morning when the big storm blew through and knocked out power for about five hours. Luckily the hail beating on the windows woke us up right before the power went out. We have an indoor-approved propane heater (and a CO monitor) so we set up the chicks and the incubators in our smallest bathroom. The incubator temperatures dropped for a bit into the high 80s but we were able to keep them to the low 90s until power went back on. The chicks really didn’t care about their change in venue; they were too busy eating and drinking to take much notice that they were in MUCH smaller digs. They were all just fine, and went back into their much more spacious brooder yesterday afternoon after we cleaned up from the fiasco that some folks say might have been a tornado and others say was just fierce straight line winds. As for the eggs, we’ll find out soon enough. One batch of chicken eggs goes into lockdown today so we’ll see.
